"Assignment 14 Research & Inspiration"

Inspiration/Ideas

-Use the actual dictionary definition on Indesign, use the texture too.

-Opened book be the poster; other information besides the what a copywriter is will just be other pages/words in the book. Have the front cover, back cover or the spine say something

-Background be a paper texture or just a solid color

-If I don't use the book other pictures could be things like; typewriter, computer and keyboard, pen and paper, feather and paper?

-Use pictures of word magnets?

-They could be used to write out what I need to be on the poster or just draw attention to certain text that is important

-Backdrop be something that has to do with being a copywriter; ie. the plane dropping fertilizer on the city*stop the spray*

Research

The PCA(the professional copywriters association)

Main things copywriters do: meet tight deadlines, come up with creative material for print, radio and tv ads, brochures and catalogs, web content and sales representation. They must be excellent and persuasive writers, be able to identify their target audience, come up with catchy phrases or slogans, brainstorm ideas and they MUST be able to have a thick skin because their work will be critiqued a lot and they must be able to work long hours as well as work under pressure to meet deadlines, very ace-paced industry!

"Visual Organization"

Visual Organization

Not directing the audience is misdirecting them

Eye Movement

-The typical eye moves from left to right and top to bottom
-Controlling eye movement within a composition is a matter of directing the natural scanning tendency of the viewers eye
-The eye tends to gravitate towards areas of complexity first. In pictures of people, the eye is always attracted to the face and particularly the eye area
-Light areas of a composition will attract the eye, especially when adjacent to a dark area
-Diagonal lines or edges will guide eye movement

Optical Center
The spot where the human eye tends to enter the page. Optical center is slightly above the mathematical center and a little to the left
-It takes a compelling element to pull your eyes away from the optical center

Z Pattern
Our visual pattern makes a sweep of the page, generally, in the shape of a "z"

A designers objective is to lead the viewers eye to the important elements or information

Fonts

-Generally do not use more than TWO fonts and make sure they compliment each other
-Avoid using all caps unless completely necessary
-Choose the right font (choose fonts according to the theme or tone of your composition)
-Do not overuse fancy and complicated fonts

"Assignment #13, Research & Inspiration"

Research

-A method in which letters or images are collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to the composition in sequence or by following a particular rule
-Invented by surrealists in the early 1900's
-Surrealism: began in the 1920's, features elements of suprise. A movement away from reality and focused on dreams, accidents, and surprise

Brainstorming

Adjectives: out-of-world, uncanny, whimsical, unbalanced, whacky, erratic
Audience: me

Examples:

I liked this piece because it combined something you would see hundreds of years ago, the head and the attire along with it, and the torso, a robot something you would expect to see hundreds of years in the future. And the bottom, which I assume are duck feet just go along with the theme of animals; the tiger head. I also liked how almost all of the picture was black and white but it was then contrasted by some color at the bottom.

This piece I found interesting because  of the contrast between human and animal body parts, as well as the contrast between genders.

This one was actually my favorite. I liked it because there was so much going on and nothing correlated with each other

"The Creative Process"

The Creative Process

A series of steps repeated every time you design something
_________________________________________

Why Do We Follow This Process

-Improve consistency
-Ability to plan and time your work
-Raise the quality of your work
-Communicate more effectively and in a more professional manner

The Five Steps of the Creative Process..

1.) Research: The more you know the easier it will be. Research the client and the competition. Get online, look in magazines, listen to music, pay attention to the world around you..whatever you need to get inspired.

2.) Brainstorm/Inspiration: Striving to be unique and innovative while still following the current trends, ensures a fresh and creative approach. Come up with adjectives or phrases that best describe your project. Ask yourself questions; what kind of message am I trying to communicate? Who is my audience? What am I trying to tell them? What kind of visuals will work for my particular audience?

3.) Sketch: THUMBNAILS! Sketch your thoughts out and work through ideas.

4.) Execute: Implement your ideas. Combine type and imagery into a well developed composition. Utilize design principles and visual organization guidelines to help. Try techniques, explore options, and analyze the outcome. If you get stuck, walk away and clear your head. If the piece doesn't look how you imagined, and it isn't working, try another idea. Forcing an idea won't result in a good design.

5.) Critique and Revise: Take a step back, (literally) and look at the design with an objective eye. Make sure the design effectively conveys the message to the intended audience. If it doesn't, go back and tweak the composition until it does. Asking others for their opinion will help with this process.

"Semester Reflection"

During this semester I learned much much more than I ever thought I would about graphic design. I learned how to use tools in Illustrator and Photoshop to create art. In Illustrator I was taught how to utilize tools to create pictures and shapes, I learned how to use work with the line element and the element of shape. When working on assignment one I used the two elements to create pictures that make people think of a certain object. In assignment two we started to work with the pen tool, which took me awhile:P but after a bit I got the hang of it. In this assignment we used texture and space and learned the difference between positive and negative space. In assignment three we also used Illustrator and worked with lines, shapes, and space but this time we learned about the color wheel and how designing things with specific colors will do different things. Assignment four was one of my favorites! I'm pretty sure it was also the first time we worked in Photoshop, we learned about the different types of color schemes and how you can use them in your art. Assignment five was also pretty interesting because we were given a lot of freedom to choose which pictures we wanted, I liked this assignment a lot as well. Assignment 6 was defiantly my favorite, we learned who to use layers and masks again and how to put pictures from the Internet into your own artwork. Assignment 7 we learned how to blend and work with edges more, and in assignment 8 we learned how to wrap text around lines and basically just how to implement text into your work. I liked this semester a lot, this is honestly one of my favorite classes! I have no suggestions for next semester because I enjoyed almost everything we did this semester!((:

"Review Week 17"

"Who Shot the Serif" Article

1.) Have you learned something?
Yes, I was able to get a review of what a serif is, the different termonologies associated with it. I learned about the different types of serifs and how they can be used.
